Default Have you successfully re-sycnhed audio for scenes?

Have you successfully re-sycnhed audio for porno scenes?

I have several mp4 files that need re-synching, and I want to know if it possible to do it.

I haven't messed with it in years. And when I was trying it, it was a huge pain in the ass.

Two scenarios:

1) The audio sync changes from beginning to end. For example, as the movie plays, the sync gets more (or less) out of sync. The problem in this instance is that the audio track is a different length than the video track. The audio track length needs to be corrected to match, and the resynced. This type of issue, I could never get right.

2) The audio sync is constant from beginning to end. This is simply a matter of adjusting the audio track (at the beginning) to match the video. Usually just a matter of adding padding or removing audio to correct the sync.

Basically you demux (ie: remove) the audio track from the file, correct the audio file, and then mux the audio and video back together.

I don't recall exact tools and I was dealing with avi files anyway. Tools often vary based on file type. In any case, you need an audio program. I used Goldenwave, but a free tool such as Audacity would likely work as well, for working with the audio track. You will also need a tool for muxing the audio and video back together.

I use Avidemux for video editing, and it has a simple tick box to shift audio, you just type in the number of milliseconds to shift it up or down, and resave the file. It works with most files except for .wmv's.

OddBall11 sums it up pretty well.

The scenario he describes in item 1 of his reply frequently results when a video is re-encoded with the wrong frame rate. For example a 30fps video get re-encoded as 29.97fps. The reduced frame rate shortens the length of the video but the sound part stays the same length. Therefore the sound gets progressively more out of sync the further you go into the video. This can be resolved, but can take a lot of guess work trying to figure out what the original frame rate was. But you can try this.

1. Open the out of sync video in Avidemux.
2. Click on Video>Frame Rate.... This will open the change frame rate dialog box.
3. In the change frame rate dialog enter your best guess at what the correct frame rate should be (this is where the guess work starts).
4. In the left hand pane of Avidemux make sure Video and Audio are set to Copy, and make sure that Format is set to match the format of your video.
5. Click File>Save>Save Video..., and choose a destination for output video and name your file. Make sure that your file name includes the file extension (avi, mp4 etc as appropriate), and then click Save.
6. When the file has been saved go to your output folder and open the saved video and check the audio sync. If you guessed the correct frame rate the audio will now be in sync.

The benefit of using this method (if it works) is that you are not re-encoding the video. You are just saving it with a corrected frame rate so there is no degredation of video quality through re-encoding. It is also pretty fast as you are not re-encoding.

Note

Audio sync errors often occur when people clip files with progs like Avidemux. Avidemux frequently does not get the frame rate correct when opening files, and when people clip and save them without entering the correct frame rate they get sync problems.

Some common errors:

30fps saved as 29.97fps and vice-versa.
24fps saved as 25fps and vice-versa.
23.976fps saved as 24fps and vice-versa.
23.976fps saved as 25fps and vice-versa.

Finally

All of the above applies to videos with constant frame rates. If the video has been encoded with a variable frame rate it may not work at all. To check the correct video specs - frame rate etc. it's well worth installing MediaInfo on your machine.

While I mentioned MediaInfo in my reply above I should have also stated that it might actually help you diagnose your sync problem. See the screengrab below.

Those are MediaInfo details for a video that I have which was out of sync and got progressively worse the further you went into the video. The sync error was a result of having saved the video in Avidemux using the incorrect frame rate.

Notice circled in red MediaInfo gives two figures for framerate.

Frame rate: 59.940 (59940/1000) FPS is the frame rate the video currently operates at.

Origianl frame rate: 60.000 FPS is what the video was originally encoded to operate at.

The solution to the above is very simple. Just follow the Avidemux option in my post above and change the frame rate from 59.94 to 60fps.

If MediaInfo dosen't show and Original frame rate you can still fix progressive sync problems, but you're then into the frame rate guessing game as mentioned above.

Also note - to get the full list of a video specs when you open MediaInfo, click View and then select Tree

Hope some of that helps.

Adding to what Oddball11 and Pad stated, a similar situation 1/Avidemux is 99% resolvable but it can be time consuming. The basic steps are ...
1) Import the video into your favorite non linear editor.
2) Decouple the audio and video channels. Lock down the video.
3) Duplicate the audio and place it on a second track. This will be used for filling.
4) Now the "fun" begins. Find the first noticeable audio drift and split the audio file in between words. Move the cut audio to where it syncs up. This will leave a gap.
5) use the second audio track to fill in the gap with simple background noise.
6) Repeat again if the drift becomes noticeable.. and it probably will. NOTE: If the audio and video lengths are truly different, you will end up losing something off the end. It can be short to several seconds depending on the initial offset.
8) Render in your favorite format. Note if you use a lossy method, you may have some degradation in audio and video quality.
9) Good Luck!

BTW.. you'll need a NLE that has some capability. The real low end ones typically don't have the ability to decouple the audio and video and duplicate an audio track.

If you're using a NLE to sort out progressive sync problems there's a much easier way to do it. In Sony Vegas this is what you would do:

1. Decouple video. (In Vegas select the audio track and hit the shortcut key "U").
2. Place cursor at the end of the audio track until the Trim Event End tool appears.
3. Press and hold Ctrl key, and the Trim Event End tool changes to the Time Stretch tool.
4. Left click mouse and hold as you stretch the audio track to the same length as the video track.
5. Render a new video file.

Click below to see animated Gif

The disadvantages of this method in Vegas are that you have to re-encode/render to a new video file, as Vegas doesn't have an option for lossless copying, and you will therefore lose some video quality in the process. I'm not sure if other NLEs have an option for lossless copying.

Much better all around is to try an figure out the correct framerates and process it through Avidemux. The process in Avideumux is lossless and you also restore the video to it's correct framerate. Also the Avidemux solution will be waaaayyyy quicker as you're copying the video, not re-encoding.

I wasn't sure what type of NLE Digmen1 had, if any, so I gave more general steps that he could apply to any NLE.

I use Davinci Resolve and like Veags, there are shortcuts like the one you mentioned. I've found that if I stretch audio too much in Resolve, it changes the pitch. I can easily get away with small audio drifts using a similar method you use in Vegas.

Thanks for all the replies.
I like the easy way, so I'll try Avi demuxe again.

I don't really have the time or energy to try some of the other methods on here, although of course they may be the only or the best option.
