"Can you give an actual example of the 3-2-1 cuse I don't get it.
Why would you make 3 copies of which 1 is on another location? I mean: this implies that you would make the other 2 copies on the same location, and what good would that be for?"

Everyone will have their own way of doing things.
But you need copies of your data in case your hard drive fails.
Then you need a copy off site (at another location) in case there is a fire, or theft etc.

Its a lot of work, but I do it because I have spent years collecting all of my "data" and I'd hate to lose it.

Could I suggest that you backup all of your files to an external hard drive and store this somewhere else.

stay away from WD external drives as they have hardware encryption so if you enclosure fails you wont be able to get the data by connecting the drive to a SATA port. You will have to find a similar enclosure (tho I am not 100% sure if that will work).

"Same location" would be your home. For example: One copy on the computer, a second copy on another drive in your closet for easy access, and a third copy on a drive offsite for a worse case scenario.

Which model and what capacity is the WD drive that you found this on?

Wouldn't the user have to enable it first?

^ No, doesnt matter if you set a password or not...data is always encrypted on most models and can only be accessed as long drive is inside the enclosure. If you google you can find links of people asking for help trying to get their data back after enclosure failure.

I am sure 3.5" extrenal Drives have it but I think even some 2.5" models have it too.

Not all of the external drives are actually encrypted. The problem that you can't access the data if you get the hdd out of its enclosure is in many cases the 4 kB sector "emulation" many (older) external drives have to ensure XP compatibility. Can be checked in msinfo32 if you look at the bytes per sector info of the external drive. If it says 4096 it's one of those drives. The newer Seagate & WD drives with the new design don't have that anymore.
